When the devastating earthquake struck close to the Wolong Panda Reserve on May 12th 2008, 60,000 hectares of panda habitat was destroyed.
The Sichuan Provincial Government have reviled plans to repopulate the destroyed habitat and much more besides in fact over 100,000 hectares.
The plans include patching together isolated areas of panda habitat with corridors so that pandas can cross freely and so spreading their genes to other areas thus reducing the potential of diseases, and other restricted gene pool related problems.
A month after their birth, the twins of Lou Sheng at Shaanxi Rare Wildlife Breeding and Research Centre in Zhouzhi County are doing well.
What more do I need to say, enjoy the pics.
Oh if you're wondering why the "Related Pandas" block on the right says Lou Lou, that's because that's another name Lou Sheng goes by.
What with pandas having multiple names, and multiple pandas having the same name, it does keep us on our toes here at Panda News, but we wouldn't have it any other way.
Chiang Mai Zoo's little girl panda cub reached 105 days old on 9th September 2009.
While she was examined and weighed some wonderful photos of her were taken.
She's a healthy 7.25 kilos and has 11 milk teeth.
Lead expert Benjamin Charlton along with colleagues Zhang Zhihe and Rebecca Snyder, took the bleats, barks, moans, honks, growls, roars and squeals from 4 Atlanta pandas along with those from 14 adult pandas in Chengdu, and processed them through a special computer application to work out their meaning.
Males it seems provide information about their size, warning smaller pandas to keep away thus avoiding confrontation and let females know how strong and healthy they are.
For the past nearly 30 years, experts from around the world had been gathering vital information for the continuing success of the panda breeding program.
As many of you will know we here at Panda News are strong supporters of Pandas International.
They do excellent work in providing equipment, milk formula and other essentials for the pandas and staff at CCRCGP.
Susan was one of the first people to visit Wolong after the earthquake on May 12th 2008, taking essential supplies for both staff and pandas.
At 11:10 am Ye Ye became the proud mother of the 22nd panda born this year.
Ye Ye was born in 1999 and a very successful mother, giving birth to a tota of 6 cubs, Lang Lang, Cui Cui, Wu Jun, Wu Jie, A Ning and this years cub.
Lang Lang and Cui Cui were choosen to be 2 of the pandas who went to Beijing to celebrate the Olympics.
I now understand that Ye Ye, is the last panda to become a mother this year at Bifengxia.
A hearty well done to both pandas and staff there for another successful year with 14 cubs born at Bifengxia.
Story was taken from a Chinese News site and translated by Google and I've tried to piece together the story. If anyone can translate a better story please let me know.
When construction workers started work at the site of a new road building built in Jinshan, Baoxing County. They were shocked to see a panda stuck at the top of a cliff. It was the first time any of the constructors had seen a panda in real life. They were concerned for the little panda that s/he may fall over the 10 meter high cliff edge.
I wish to thank Leo Uu from Flickr who has very kindly granted permission for us to use some of her excellent photos taken on her trips to see the pandas of China.
I have taken quite a few of them and added them to the profiles in "The Pandas".
"The Pandas" is slowly coming together with lots of facts and photos of every panda that's been in captivity since Su Lin was first introduced to the world in 1936. "The Pandas" is very much a work in progress so please let me know what you would like to see there.
The WWF has been using the iconic panda as their logo and collection tins since the 1960's.
Now in collaboration with Selfridges and some of the UK's leading creative talents, a collection of the tins have been specially decorated and are now on display in Selfridges in London. On Monday 12th of October the works will be auctioned off to raise funds for the WWF's environmental conservation work around the world.
If anyone is visiting the collection I would be interested in any photos of them, but please make sure that you are allowed to take them.
The superstars of Taipei zoo in Taiwan, have received over 2.25 million visitors since they arrived in Taiwan late last year.
They receive between 2,000 and 3,000 visitors a day which peaks to 10,000 a day during holidays.
The pair are enjoying their time in Taiwan, but do not like the heat preferring to stay in their air conditioned house when the temperatures reach over 25 degrees centigrade.
