Then they were loaded in a truck and driven to Chengdu. Locals along the way waved and threw flowers to wish them well on their journey.

Once at Chengdu they will board a plane to Taiwan that was due to leave at 6am GMT. The pair fly with 20 Chinese experts and their keepers who will stay with them till they have settled in and the new keepers are familiar with them.

The pair are expected to go on public display around January 26th in the new year celebrations after they have completed their quarantine with a clean bill of health.
