The Prime Minister of Great Britain (Gordon Brown) has sent a letter to David Windmill, chief executive of the Royal Zoological Society for Scotland (RZSS). Indicating his support in the zoo's campaign to obtain a pair of pandas to Edinburgh Zoo.
Back in May before the terrible earthquake which hit China, Edinburgh officials visited the Wolong Panda Research Centre and obtained a letter of intent from the Chinese Government. The letter signifies that the British Government wants to enter political talks with the Chinese over the pandas. This is a major achievement and puts the Edinburgh team closer to obtaining their goal.
The RZSS will now enter into detailed negotiations. The zoo will be expected to offer a package of financial aid and scientific expertise to support conservation programmes.
The Zoo is hoping to obtain the pandas in 2010.
On a personal note I would love to see a pair of pandas living in Great Britain.
