Twins bring hope to Bifengxia

2008-Jul-06

Guo Guo Guo Guo 帼帼 439 1996-Sep-14 Female CCRCGP Bifengxia WOLONG Jia Jia - #230 Xin Xing - #329 , a female panda moved from the Wolong Panda Breeding Centre has given birth to twins in Bifengxia, Sichuan, China. They are the first to be born this year. This is a very special occasion as the pregnancy happened around the time of the May 12th quake. Caretakers have removed one of the twins and weighed it at 150g (6oz).

Pandas usually will only look after one cub at a time as it takes a lot of care and attention. In the wild the other is left to die. The caretakers will look after the removed cub and swap it with the other one so both get a chance to be looked after by it's mother. This technique was pioneered by the people at the Wolong Panda Breeding Centre and has helped more cubs to survive. Mother pandas do not seem to mind the cub being swapped and will look after the one in her den.

I hope that this is the first of many. Last year 12 sets of twins were born in China. A record in the 40 year history of the Panda Breeding Program.

Congratulations to everyone involved. I look forward to meeting the new arrivals when I visit in September.
