Between 2001 and 2004, 25 Panda Cubs were born 11 of which developed unexplained symptoms of diarrhea, flatulence, ascites and anal bleeding with death soon following.
After years of research the cause is now believed to be caused by a Rotavirus. A virus which is a communicable of all pandas. Which can take between 3 and 18 months to cure using conventional treatments.
Experts in 2005 formulated a new treatment which brings the treatment down to 5 days. Between 2005 and 2009, 31 pandas were at high risk of the disease but all of them were cured.
