2010 was a terrible year for panda deaths, and it didn't end without taking another young panda.
On December 18th 2010 Lang Lang Lang Lang 朗朗 642 2006-Aug-25 2010-Dec-18 Male NANJING WOLONG Ye Ye - #495 , a 4 year old male cub passed away.
Lang Lang Lang Lang 朗朗 642 2006-Aug-25 2010-Dec-18 Male NANJING WOLONG Ye Ye - #495 had been suffering from severe seizures for some time, and the treatment he was given did not work. Last year his sister Cui Cui was severely ill and she took a long time to make a full recovery.
The first incidence was on November 9th 2010 when his keepers noticed that he was walking round in circles, twitching his mouth and issued a cry of pain. A vet from BFX (Bifengxia) was sent to examine Lang Lang Lang Lang 朗朗 642 2006-Aug-25 2010-Dec-18 Male NANJING WOLONG Ye Ye - #495 who thought it looked like he had epilepsy. They began treatment and by the 16th his condition had gradually stabilised.
On December 1st 2010, Lang Lang Lang Lang 朗朗 642 2006-Aug-25 2010-Dec-18 Male NANJING WOLONG Ye Ye - #495 was sick again with continuous seizures and convulsions, He then went in to a coma for 15 days. The staff were separated in to 2 groups with each group watching Lang Lang Lang Lang 朗朗 642 2006-Aug-25 2010-Dec-18 Male NANJING WOLONG Ye Ye - #495 for 12 hours at a time.
Despite the 24 hour care Lang Lang Lang Lang 朗朗 642 2006-Aug-25 2010-Dec-18 Male NANJING WOLONG Ye Ye - #495 passed away on the 18th of December.
There are some concerns with his sister and she is being watched, but there are no tests which can indicate if she will suffer the same fate.
There is currently no evidence that suggests that the illness is inherited from parents, but it does appear that the closer the parents are related the higher the chances of Epilepsy illness.
Lang Lang Lang Lang 朗朗 642 2006-Aug-25 2010-Dec-18 Male NANJING WOLONG Ye Ye - #495 and his sister Cui Cui were both two of the pandas that were sent to Beijing for the Olympic games in 2008.
