Bai Yun pregnant with two fetus'

2009-Jul-30

The San Diego Zoo's panda blog has an interesting story about Bai Yun Bai Yun 白云 371 1991-Sep- Female San Diego Zoo WOLONG Dong Dong - #358 Pan Pan - #308 and how recent ultrasound show that she is expecting twins. Though on a later ultrasound examination only one could be seen.

The team are not sure what happened to the other fetus, it could just of moved and be hiding. Panda cubs are really tiny compared to their mums. Another idea is that the fetus could not of been completely healthy and Bai Yun Bai Yun 白云 371 1991-Sep- Female San Diego Zoo WOLONG Dong Dong - #358 Pan Pan - #308 's body reabsorbed it. Panda cubs take a lot of care and attention to raise and the mother can usually only cope with one at a time. Researchers think that pandas might produce two eggs each year and both become fertile and start to develop, with the least viable one being reabsorbed back into the mothers body.

Ultrasounds in previous years have shown that Bai Yun Bai Yun 白云 371 1991-Sep- Female San Diego Zoo WOLONG Dong Dong - #358 Pan Pan - #308 was creating twins when she had Mei Sheng, but only he was born. Is this the year when she has two cubs, or will she just have one.

If she does have twins will she bring them up herself? She is a natural mother and has a wealth of experience of bringing up cubs, or will she pick just one of them to nurturer?

The staff and vets at San Diego Zoo are gearing up and planning for all eventualities.
