Panda News from around the world
  • Guo Guo the first panda to give birth last year after the terrifying earthquake, is one of the last pandas to give birth this year.

She gave birth to a female at 17:35 and a male at 23;12 both on the 27th September 2009.

Guo Guo has given birth to three sets of twins and a single cub in recent years.

This brings the total to 24 cubs born this year, with 16 of them born at Bifengxia (BGX). Well done to all.

  • At 11:10 am Ye Ye became the proud mother of the 22nd panda born this year.

Ye Ye was born in 1999 and a very successful mother, giving birth to a tota of 6 cubs, Lang Lang, Cui Cui, Wu Jun, Wu Jie, A Ning and this years cub.

Lang Lang and Cui Cui were choosen to be 2 of the pandas who went to Beijing to celebrate the Olympics.

I now understand that Ye Ye, is the last panda to become a mother this year at Bifengxia.

A hearty well done to both pandas and staff there for another successful year with 14 cubs born at Bifengxia.

  • The cub that was born on the 26th of August to Ying Ying could of been sired by Mei Sheng, the giant panda that was born in San Diego Zoo and returned to China.

Mei Sheng was one of two pandas who mated with Ying Ying when she came into season. The other panda who mated with Ying Ying was Lu Lu

Mei Sheng was only mated with Ying Ying. It was the first time that he had been mated.

Currently they do not know who the father is, but DNA tests could be done to establish the father, as such is the interest in Mei Sheng.

  • Ying Ying has given birth to a female cub weighing 158.5g at Bifengxia near Ya'an.

Well done to Ying Ying and all staff at BFX.

Come on Chengdu, where are your cubs this year. I hope everything is ok and the pandas are just a little late giving birth.

  • At 5:03 am local time Le Sheng after 7 hours of labour gave birth to this years largest panda cub weighing 213.8 grams (7.5 oz.)

The report says that Le Sheng was born on the 3rd August 1998, but I have that panda down as You You who already give birth this year. The only Le Sheng I can find was born on the 10th August 2000. Can any body shed any more light on this?

  • On August 15th 2009 the 15th panda cub of 2009 was born to Zi Zhu at Bifengxia.

Currently there are no further details.

  • Once again Chet pointed out that there was another post on the Chinese blog about births at Bifengxia.

This time to Tien Tien so well done to everyone.

  • On 24th July 2009 Hai Zi a 15 year old panda gave birth.

Hai Zi is already the mother to 3 other cubs.

This brings the total of cubs at BFX to 8 for this year, with 4 of them born within 3 days of each other.

  • You You, (One of the pandas I looked after whilst I was at Bifengxia) has given birth on July 23rd.

Researchers at CCRCGP have been trying for a while to artificially inseminate a panda with sperm that had been frozen. Usually the revived seaman is not very fertile, but continuing efforts have increased the vitality of sperm to 80%.

You You is the first panda to give birth after being artificially inseminated with revived sperm.

Well done You You, and to everyone at BFX.

  • Hua Mei ang Gong Zhu have given birth to a single cub each.

    More details later.

Thanks to Chet for finding this.
