  • On the 4th August 2011, Qing He at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, gave birth to a healthy male Panda cub.

  • Qi Zhen a 12 year old Giant Panda gave birth to twins on the 4th of August 2011.

    The first was born at 8:07 am local time who is a female weighing 152g and the second a male born at 10:26 am with a birth weight of 122g.

    These are the first twins born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding this year.

    Both mum and siblings are doing well.

    Well done Qi Zhen, and all the staff at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

    It appears we are well and truly in to panda birth season.

    I look forward to bringing more updates of panda births.

  • At 5:07 am local time Mao Mao the giant panda who was used for the basis of the 2008 Olympic Mascot Jing Jing gave birth to a 170g Giant Panda Cub.

    Mao Mao gave birth to twins in 2008 and had difficulty in nursing the cubs, this time she has shown good parenting skills.

    With this birth the total number of Giant Pandas at the Chengdu Panda Research Centre to 98.

    Well done to Mao Mao and all the staff at Chengdu Panda Research Centre.

  • Panda House the blog of Chengdu's Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding have released some new photos of Mei Lan, the Giant Panda who was born in Atlanta USA and now lives in Chengdu. There's alot of photos here, but head over to the reference link to see even more.

    She has became one beautiful young panda lady.

  • The Chengdu Panda Research Centre is celebrating another birth. Ya Ya a 20 year old Giant Panda gave birth on the 10th of September 2010 to a female cub.

    Ya Ya has given birth to 13 Cubs in 9 Litters of which 12 survived. She really is a super mum.

    This year the pandas at Chengdu have given birth to 7 Panda Cubs, whilst last year they only gave birth to 4 cubs. Which the research centre said was due to the mothers being exhausted.

    It is now reported that Chengdu now has 90 Giant Pandas housed there.

    Once again well done to Ya Ya and all the staff at Chengdu.

  • 7 year old Yuan Yuan has given birth to a twin pair of boys. Yuan Yuan gave to to a single cub in 2008.

    Yuan Yuan mated with Lin Lin in march of this year. (Does any one know Lin Lin I can't seem to find him in the stud book)

  • I've gotten a report that Rau Hin at the Wakayma Zoo, Japan has given birth to twins.

    Rau Hin, also know as Liang Bang was born on the 6th September 2000. This is her second set of twins.

    Sorry for the short abrupt post, but I'm very busy with my 'proper' job but wanted to let you know.

  • On 4th August 2010 Na Na a 7 year old Giant Panda at Bifengxia give birth to a male cub, This is Na Na's third cub, She gave birth for the first time last year to twins.

    Then a few days later on 6th Aug Qi Zhen gave birth to twins at Chengdu Research Centre. Qi Zhen is a 11 year old, this pair brings her total number of cubs to 5.

  • Er Yatou a seventeen year old Giant Panda at the Chengdu Research Centre gave birth to a male cub on Monday 26th July.

    Er Yatou was born in 1993 this cubs her total of cubs to eight.

    I think that there will be quite a few more births in the following weeks.

    I will try to let you know as soon as I find out.

  • Jiao Zi given birth to cubs at Chengdu Giant Panda Research Centre.

    Chengdu is off to a flying start this year, as they only had four cubs last year due to tired mothers.

    Lets hope it will be a bumper crop of Giant Panda Cubs this year from all Research Centers and Zoos

  • Between 2001 and 2004, 25 Panda Cubs were born 11 of which developed unexplained symptoms of diarrhea, flatulence, ascites and anal bleeding with death soon following.

    After years of research the cause is now believed to be caused by a Rotavirus. A virus which is a communicable of all pandas. Which can take between 3 and 18 months to cure using conventional treatments.

    Experts in 2005 formulated a new treatment which brings the treatment down to 5 days. Between 2005 and 2009, 31 pandas were at high risk of the disease but all of them were cured.

  • The Changsha Zoo has signed an agreement with the Chengdu Breeding Centre, to study four pandas, two male and two female for a period of two years.

    Changsha Zoo have started build facilities for the pandas including a public area, a large cage, delivery room, nursery and a preparation area.

    The main panda room will contain a pool, swings perches and a rock hill amongst other place. Their bedrooms will be air conditioned.

    Keepers from Changsha Zoo will visit Chengdu for training on the care of the pandas and how to perform the relevant research and data collection

  • It took a little while but Mei Lan has come to terms with her move from Zoo Atlanta to The breeding centre at Chungdu.

  • On 29th 2010, The State Forestry Administration announced that Shu Xiang (Male) and Qi Miao (Female) two cubs born in 2008 at Chungdu Panda Breeding Centre will be sent to Macao.

  • On the 26th of April 2010 a wild panda was spotted near a corn field in Beichuan County. It was having difficulty breathing and kept stopping to get it's breath. Villagers reported the panda to the Forestry Bureau who immediately sent staff.

    Once it was confirmed that the panda was ill, an emergency plan was put into action to capture the panda and sent it to Chengdu Research Centre, to be further diagnosed.

  • The Chengdu Panda Research Centre has signed an agreement with Bee Garden Co. Ltd. from Sichuan Yang to be the sole provider of Honey to the centre.

    Bee Garden donated 2000kg of honey to the centre.

  • Yuan Yuan the female of the breeding pair that was sent to Taipei Taiwan in 2008, has showing signs of being estrus. This is the first time that she has displayed signs. Unfortunately Tuan Tuan is showing no signs of wanting to mate with her.

    Whilst they are of the same age, females become sexually mature at a younger age than males.

    Staff will put the pair together to see if a mating will occur but a cub is not expected this year.

  • On Match 24th 2010 Coca-Cola China took out a life long adoption on the first pair of pandas born in Chengdu after the earthquake in 2008.

  • Kouhin (Xing Bin) the nearly 5 year old Giant Panda born at Adventure World Japan, will be sent to Chengdu, the home of his parents on the 15th March 2010.

    Two of his older siblings Ei Mei and Yu Hin have already gone to Chengdu and are part of the breeding program.

  • Unless you've been hiding under a rock the news has been full of the departure of two giant pandas from America to China.
