    Vienna Zoo has released another video of cub Fu Hu, this time it shows him being weighed and also playing in a tree as the keepers go about cleaning his cage.

    He's such a cutie, I need to go visit.

  • Vienna's Cub Gets Named

    On the 23rd of August 2010 Yang Yang of Zoo Austria gave birth to a tiny boy cub. After a poll of visitors to their site the cub was recently named as Fu Hu (Happy Tiger).
  • Time to Choose a Name for Vienna's Giant Panda Cub

    You have until Midnight on the 21st of November 2010 to help choose a name for the 11 week old cub at Vienna.

    The names to choose from are:
    Fu Hu 福虎 happy tiger,
    Ao Kang 奥康 healthy Austrian boy,
    Wei Xing 维兴 Freude Wiens, joy of Vienna

  • Vienna's 2010 Giant Panda Cub is Weighed

    With the two month old Austrian Giant Panda being better able to look after himself, Yang Yang has taken to leaving the cub alone for a couple of hours whilst she goes out and feeds.

    The staff at the zoo took this opportunity to weigh him and give him a check over. He now weighs 4.5 KG (a little under 10 lbs) and seems to be in very good health.

    Zoo officials have said the public will be able to help choose the cubs name, when they have an online vote.

    Vienna is one of the closest zoo's with pandas to where I live and I hope to pay a visit to see him next year.
  • Yang Yang of Vienna Gives Birth

    On August 23rd 2010 at 14:14 Yang Yang of Vienna gave birth to her second cub. The new cub was born exactly 3 years after her first cub Fu Long who has since gone to China.

    Vienna is one of the closest zoo's to me with pandas, and of course plans are now being made to make a visit in time when the new arrival makes his/her appearance.

  • Love is in the Air for Vienna Pandas

    Yang Yang and Long Hui, have been busy making babies, drawing crowds at Vienna’s Schönbrunn Zoo despite days of non-stop rain.

    The pair surprised everyone in 2007 when Yang Yang give birth to her first cup Fu Long, (who is now is Bifengxia) after a successful natural mating in the spring of that year.

    "Science has it pandas are generally reluctant when it comes to mating and very poor lovers – but try telling that to this pair. We simply can't stop them," laughed one keeper.

    Lets hope for another brother or sister for Fu Long
  • Date Set for Fu Long to Leave Home

    Adorable Fu Long of Vienna Zoo turned two in August and due to be sent to China soon after wards, but the powers that be decided that making him travel for over 15 hours in such hot temperatures would not be a good idea, and so his stay was extended so he could travel in a cooler month. (It also gave me a chance to visit him again)

    Well the cooler weather is now with us and Fu Long is set to depart on November 18th.

    Good Luck Fu Long. Hopefully I will see you next year in China.

  • Fu Long to stay until the end of the year.

    The Austrian Times has released a story that Fu Long (Lucky Dragon) of Vienna's Schönbrunn zoo Giant Panda Cub will be staying a little longer than first thought. Under the terms of the contract between the zoo and China, Fu Long was due to be returned on his 2nd birthday, after raising concerns with Fu Long's health if he is moved in the summer China has agreed that he can stay a little longer to a more suitable time to allow his to adjust.
  • Fu Long to leave Austria

    Fu Long the adorable cub born at the Vienna Zoo, is set to return to China before August this year.

    The contract between Schönbrunn Palace and Chinese authorities states that the panda bear must leave after two years.

    Fu Long was born in August 2007 after a successful natural mating between his parents Yang Yang and Long Hui.

    On a personal note I visited Fu Long and his parents in October 2007, unfortunetly his mother Yang Yang or Fu Long was not on display, I was hoping to pay them a visit this year. I'm not sure if I can go before he's due to move.

    When you reach the panda enclosure you are greeted by large cutout pictures of the pandas Longhui and Weiwei. When we first got there there was no sign of any pandas as they were inside and the building was closed to visitors due to Fulong only just being born. I had terrible thoughts that the only pandas we were going to see were of these wooden ones.

    Most of the areas in Vienna have a bronze statute representing the type of animal that lives in that part of the zoo. Here is the panda one, which I think was adorable. If you look in the background you should just be able to see Longhui

    When we visited Fulong was only a couple of months old, I don't think that he even had a name. We could only see him on a TV screen outside, Most of the time he was cuddeled up underneath mummy (Weiwei). I managed to get a couple of photos with him on the screen.

    When Longhui was drinking he looked so gentle lapping up the water, he is a beautiful panda very graceful and elegant.
