Panda News from around the world
  • It is with great sadness that we report that an 30 year old giant panda Chuan Chuan who lived in Shanghai Zoo passed away last month.

He was wild born and captured around 1981 in Baoting and transfered to Shanghai. He was moved a few times between Shanghai and Chongoing and spent some time in Beijing before making Shanghai his home in 2001.

He sired 9 cubs including Le Le at Memphis Zoo, and was grandfather to Le Le at Hong Kong Ocean Park.

  • The ten panda cubs who have been selected to go to Shanghai for the 2010 Shanghai Expo are due to leave on the 5th of January.

The ten pandas were all born in 2008 at Bifengxia, Ya'an after the terriable earthquake of May 12th 2008.

  • News 163.com is reporting that 10 of the pandas born in 2008 at Bifengxia will travel to Shanghai for the world Expo next year.

According to my research there were 11 pandas born at BFX last year, so I'm unsure if all 11 will be sent to Shanghai or 10 of the 11, or indeed there were only 10 cubs born last yeat at BFX.

Does anyone else have any additional information?

    UPDATE

Thanks to Jérôme and Annette, who pointed out that there is in fact 13 Panda Cubs born in 2008 living at BFX, My records had the extra 2 being born at Chengdu.

  • 2009/03/14. CCRCGP held a "Thanks Ceremony" in Shanghai at theeeeeee Shanghai Wildlife zoo, to say thank you for their support during Wolongs darkest hour on May 12th 2009. The Ceremony included gifts to Shanghai Wildlife Zoo of water and soil from Wolong, a scroll print of the 13 cubs born in 2008 at Bifengxia along with paw prints of the cubs.

Whilst Shanghai did not foster any additional pandas after the quake they did give them support in other ways.

At the Ceremony 4 Shanghai citizens were given "Love Citizens" certificates for their help and support to Wolong's pandas.

  • On March 11th, the north line of CCRCGP's "Thanks Tourism around China" arrived at Shanghai Wildlife Zoo and visited the four pandas (Jai Si, Rong Rong, Ya Ao and Tong Tong) The members of the northline are happy to see that the pandas are doing well and enjoying their life in Shanghai Zoo.

  • Ten pandas from the Wolong Research base are to be transfered to a specialy built panda enclosure in March 2010 in time for the Shanghai expo. They will stay there until November.

It is not clear where the enclosure will be built. I'll update when I find out more.
