Cub Hopes for Ya Ya

2011-Jan-23

Of the four zoos in America that have Giant Pandas, Memphis Zoo is the only zoo that's not yet had a cub. Ya Ya Ya Ya 507 2000-Aug- Female Memphis Zoological Garden & Aquarium Beijing Zoological Gardens Le Le - #320 Ying Ying - #369 the female Giant Panda there has conceived but so far has been unable to bring it to full term.

It is thought that one of the reasons could be is that she goes in to her estrus cycle in the holiday season which is too early compared to other pandas around the globe, which usually enter the cycle between March and May.

Experts at the zoo submitted a plan to the Chinese experts which will hopefully move her cycle to the correct time. The Chinese gave the go ahead and so the zoo has altered the lighting in and around her enclosure and turned down the thermostat so that her body believes that it is still winter and early spring which the extra light and warmth could signify.

If Ya Ya Ya Ya 507 2000-Aug- Female Memphis Zoological Garden & Aquarium Beijing Zoological Gardens Le Le - #320 Ying Ying - #369 does enter estrus before Spring the zoo has frozen lots of bamboo shoots which makes up a large part of a pregnant female's diet.

Lets hope that these thing help and Memphis Zoo has a Panda Cub this year.

Good Luck Memphis
